About the show:
Organic Sofrito or Other Recipes for Disaster
Written and performed by Venessa Diaz, Organic Sofrito is a dark comedy that explores the connection between mental illness and the traditional Latin diet. The protagonist, Santita Soto is a Holistic Chef with a big internet following. She is a master at recreating Latin dishes that are not only full of flavor, but chock full of memories. As she nimbly executes each recipe, the audience gets a hearty dose of her painful childhood. Along the way, Santita reaches deep within and learns to forgive and unburden herself to reach her life-long dream of hosting her own Network cooking show. The themes of addiction, love-lost, anger and regret are ever present in the lives of the women in her family. She vows to break the vicious cycle, but learns that food alone cannot undo generations of affliction.
For over five years, Venessa has been working on her first solo show, Organic Sofrito or Other Recipes for Disaster. After many drafts and several table readings, her show made its WORLD PREMIER at the prestigious United Solo Theatre Festival! With a great team behind her, such as Desmar Guevara (composer), Tere Martínez (dramaturge), Rosie Berrido (Spanish dialect coach) and Melissa Crespo (director), the show was a hit with two sold out dates!
