I remember being a kid wasn’t always easy. The pressures of home and school felt overwhelming most of the time. In junior high school, I was bullied daily. I had no desire to get involved in any of the athletic teams or after-school programs. I was scared and felt lonely but I consider myself very lucky to have not fallen into trouble. Many Latino children aren’t so lucky.
Imagine if I had someone who could relate to those things I struggled with in my youth? I strongly believe that things would’ve been easier to deal with, 100%! Wouldn’t you agree? As an adult, I know first-hand what it means to have mentors in my life. With a guiding and encouraging role model in my life, I’m made aware of all the possibilities I have at leading the life I deserve. Part of my successes wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for those men and women who have always been there for me, I wouldn’t be who I am today.
Well say hello to the Big Brother Big Sister Program!
Finally, 81% of adults who participated in our program as Littles say their Big Brother or Big Sister caused them to broaden their horizons – to change what they thought possible in life.
Thanks to the Big Brother Big Sister organization, it is possible to keep kids (‘littles’)in school and off drugs and alcohol. About 20% of the children they serve are Hispanic – a number that’s on the rise. Yet, only 9% of the Bigs are Latino. Volunteers (‘Bigs”) are improving the short and longterm outcomes of the lives of young children through guidance. Educational success, socio-emotional competency, and the avoidance of risky behaviors rise are the key to living healthy and happy lives.
I’m honored to be part of a three post series that will be concentrating on recruiting Latino ‘Bigs’ (volunteers) for this incredible program. The Big Brother Big Sister program needs Latino/a volunteers like you! You can provide a positive, life changing opportunity for a little young boy or young girl. As a Latina, I was always taught that juntos podemos alcanzar la meta (together we can achieve our goals). Our community’s future depends on us.
