Because Summer is officially here, I think we have so much to be excited about!
The beach, poolside umbrella drinks, and lots of time outdoors with my family is a part enjoying every minute of Summer vacation. Right? I mean, that’s what’s summer’s all about.
Your agenda is probably full of fun and interesting things to do this summer but I just want you to also keep in mind the safety precautions you should take before you head out. Did you know that 1 in 5 Americans get skin cancer (melanoma) in their lifetime? The incidence of melanoma among Latinos has increased at a yearly rate of 2.9% in the past 15 years. Pretty scary, huh? Skin cancer is more common than we’d expect because we’re basically at risk everytime we’re outdoors.
I’d like you to choose your skin’s health above everything else. For yourself, for your family, and for your friends. Remember to always apply protective sunscreen around all areas of your body (exposed and unexposed). Sunglasses and wide brim hats (like the one I’m shown wearing in the above photo) aren’t just must have accessories, they’re also part of protective gear you can wear on top of your sunscreen. Apply the sunscreen to your body every 4 hours, or as directed, if you’re bathing in a pool or ocean. If you have children, I cannot begin to express the importance of protecting their skin as well. Skin cancer can affect all of us, the young and not so young.
Many people still in the dark (no pun intended 😉 ) about the high risks they put their skin in everyday so that is why the Choose Skin Health™ campaign was formed. Neutrogena partnered with the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) to encourage us (the public) to choose healthy sun safe ways to behave. With early detection, melanoma has an almost 100 percent five year survival rate. The Choose Skin Health™ campaign encourages us to get our skin examined for skin cancer by a dermatologist, and to also encourage others to get screened for skin cancer. It’s easy! Use sunscreen regularly and practice self skin exams monthly. Click HERE to find a FREE sun screening location near you.
“One American dies of melanoma almost every hour. Even so, as summer approaches, many people feel the longing to bathe under the sun or go to the tanning salon, still ignoring the serious repercussions of exposing their skin to UVA and UVB radiation without protection. Nonetheless, skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers and, with early detection, most of them are curable.” – Choose Skin Health™

About Choose Skin Health™:
Launched in 2009, the Choose Skin Health™ campaign’s mission is to help fight the skin cancer epidemic, educating and empowering the public to follow healthy sun-safe behaviors and take proper precautions against sun damage, such as signing up for a free skin cancer screening, visiting www.chooseskinhealth.com. The initiative was made possible through a partnership between Neutrogena® and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), in their commitment with educating the community on sun-related issues.
